Your Support Matters

Little Angels Blood Cancer Fund is Critical to Patient Recovery

For those undergoing treatment, living expenses most of us take for granted may simply be unmanageable. Without Little Angels’ assistance, many patients would not be able to afford these hidden costs of treatment that must be addressed for successful treatment and recovery.

Essentially, we are a last line of support when no other financial assistance is available to the patient.

“My wife was given monthly parking passes and cafeteria coupons. At a time when my family was already under a great deal of stress, these seemingly small gestures were a terrific boost to our ability to cope with the situation.”

Danny Sullivan - Recipient of Little Angels Funding

Your help is critical because treatment for blood cancers and autoimmune disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis requiring a stem cell transplant is challenging and costly for patients and families.

Why Support Little Angels

Empty beds in ward at hospital

TOGETHER

Outpatients are treated daily for several months.

Those coming in from out of town, in many cases, do not have anyone to support them locally while undergoing treatment.

WE CAN MAKE

Patients often aren’t able to work for 6-12 months post-transplant due to a compromised immune system. Some do not have disability insurance. Even those who have insurance often do not receive enough to cover their living expenses or the extraordinary costs associated with treatment and recovery.

A DIFFERENCE

The financial challenges include many non-medical costs associated with treatment, such as hospital parking fees, accommodation, childcare, caregiver support, and travel. These costs can easily exceed $1500 per month.

What You Should Know

Income tax receipts are issued for donations of $15 and above.

All donations to Little Angels are from individual donors like you.

Little Angels does not receive any government support.

A Few of These Challenges…

  • The patient’s family income is reduced due to both the patient being unable to work and often family members needing to take time off work to be caregivers.

  • Out of town patients need to stay near The Ottawa Hospital for treatments or travel into town daily.

Patient Eligibility Requirements

Social workers at The Ottawa Hospital determine eligibility based on a financial means test and geographical criteria. With some exceptions, patients come from Ottawa and the surrounding area, such as Brockville, Smiths Falls, Perth, Arnprior, Hawkesbury, parts of Eastern Quebec & Thunder Bay.
