Frequently Asked Questions

Donors

  • For those undergoing treatment, living expenses most of us take for granted may simply be unmanageable. Without Little Angels’ assistance, many patients would not be able to afford these hidden costs of treatment that must be addressed for successful treatment and recovery.

Essentially, we are a last line of support when no other financial assistance is available to the patient.

  • You can always make a donation to Little Angels. You can also participate in one of our fundraising events, such as the Gatineau Loppet or the February Challenge. For either event, you can use our fundraising tools to recruit other donors to support you in your activity.

Little Angels is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers. In addition to fundraising, we need people with financial and management skills to help us coordinate with Ottawa Hospital staff and to meet our legal requirements as a registered charity.

  • Little Angels raises funds that hospital social workers use to assist qualified patients. All money raised goes into an account at The Ottawa Hospital. Social workers can draw on this account to provide funds to patients struggling with non-medical costs related to their treatment.

General

  • The Little Angels Blood Cancer Fund provides financial support to qualified patients in treatment for a blood cancer or undergoing a stem cell transplant at the Ottawa Hospital. We help patients experiencing financial difficulty with non-medical expenses such as travel, accommodation, childcare and food etc.

  • The Little Angels Blood Cancer Fund is a registered charity founded in 1996 by Diane George-Wiggins, an early bone marrow transplant recipient. For more information about the origins of Little Angels please see Diane’s story.

  • The Gatineau Loppet has been an important fundraising mechanism for Little Angels. The Gatineau Loppet is Canada’s largest international cross-country skiing event. It welcomes approximately 2,500 skiers from around the world each year.

Evelyn Stone, a Little Angels board member, has been recruiting enthusiasts to ski in the Loppet to raise funds for The Little Angels Blood Cancer Fund. In her first year, 2002, she recruited 20 people to ski and they raised $7,000. Since 2002, the number of skiers and funds raised for Little Angels has increased steadily.

Over the years the Gatineau Loppet Board has been very supportive of Evelyn’s fundraising efforts.

  • In 2021, in the midst of the Covid Pandemic, Evelyn decided to offer another fundraising option, one that could be done individually: The February Activity Challenge. As a fundraiser, you can challenge yourself, friends, or teammates to set a goal - any type of activity goal to be completed between February 1 – 28 such as, walking, treadmill, playing tennis, swimming, whatever way you enjoy challenging yourself. Set your goal and create a personal fundraising page.

Fundraise! Share your personal fundraising page with your family, friends, and community asking them to sponsor or donate to your page for The Little Angels.

  • The OHF administers the Little Angels Blood Cancer Fund, issues tax receipts for donations and works with us to manage the fundraising side of special events.

The Ottawa Hospital Foundation is responsible for creating and administering the Little Angels fundraising website donors use to sponsor skiers or snowshoers participating in the Gatineau Loppet, one of our main fundraising events.
